Diabetes a leading cause of kidney disease

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 2013-- November is National Diabetes Month and DaVita®, a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. (NYSE: DVA) and a leading provider of kidney care services, shares tips and resources about managing diabetes and kidney disease.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney disease, which is the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S. According to a study by the National Kidney Foundation™, kidney disease is still significantly under diagnosed among those with diabetes.

“With the right knowledge and education, diabetes does not have to result in kidney disease,” said Erika Compost, DaVita facility administrator and Kidney SmartSM educator. “Getting tested early may actually prevent kidney failure.”

One in 10 adults age 20 or older in the U.S. has kidney disease. DaVita offers a free, online risk assessment quiz – which takes only 60 seconds – at DaVita.com/KidneyAware as a way to educate the public about the risk factors that can lead to kidney disease.

For those looking to manage their diabetes through diet, DaVita offers additional meal planning tools and recipes at DaVita.com/Cookbook.
